Laurie A. Johnson - Director

Biography

Ms. Johnson has more than 17 years of professional experience in risk management and disaster recovery research and consulting, and has written extensively about the economics of catastrophes, land use and risk, and disaster recovery and reconstruction. With a strong multi-disciplinary and communications base, her experience is both local and international, and spans a variety of disciplines, private and public sector clients, perils, and phases of disaster management. Her clients have included the U.S. and California geologic surveys, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), National Science Foundation, Southern California Earthquake Center, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium.

She has researched many disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, the 2001 World Trade Center collapse, and many earthquakes around the world. She recently completed a 6-month assignment in New Orleans developing a unified recovery and rebuilding plan, as well as a comprehensive financing and implementation framework, for the City following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. During her 8-year tenure at Risk Management Solutions (RMS), she managed a global team that helped insurers integrate natural catastrophe risk knowledge within their business, and also ran a 24/7 reporting service for the re/insurance industry when large disasters struck. In December 2005, Reactions Magazine named her one of the global insurance industry's rising stars.

Ms. Johnson graduated from Texas A&M University with a Master of Urban Planning and a Bachelor of Science in geophysics. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Planning Association.
