Its name honors the late California state senator Alfred Alquist, who had a long and distinguished career supporting earthquake safety in the state legislature.
Starting with State Senator Alfred E. Alquist himself in 1986, the California Earthquake Safety Foundation (CESF) presented the Alfred E. Alquist Medal to individuals, public agencies, corporations, charitable and other organizations that demonstrated outstanding achievements in basic and applied research, public policy advancement, education, volunteer service and program management in earthquake safety in California. The last year the CESF dispensed the award was 2009, when they honored geophysicist Lori Dengler. Starting in 2010, the Alfred E. Alquist Special Recognition Award will be given by EERI. - 2010
