EERI's Learning from Earthquakes Program, with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation, has organized and deployed a large reconnaissance team to Chile. Following on the heels of an advance team looking specifically at nonstructural performance, the main team held a March 14 kick-off meeting in Santiago before splitting into several smaller groups visiting distinct areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Each group is accompanied by colleagues from the Pontificia Universidad Católica or the University of Chile. As these groups get internet access, they are posting up brief reports on the Chile Clearinghouse site: http://www.eqclearinghouse.org/20100227-chile/.
EERI also created an interactive map for this event, where investigators can easily post photos coupled to a map location. As team members return to the U.S., more and more points will be added to the map, so check back frequently: http://www.eqclearinghouse.org/20100227-chile/photos-from-eeri-team
In the next week or so we will be sending out a summary of the team's preliminary observations on this important earthquake. A list of team members is available here: http://www.eqclearinghouse.org/20100227-chile/eeri-plans
