EERI Response to M7.0 Earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan on April 15, 2016

On Friday, April 15, a M7.0 earthquake struck north of Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu in southwest Japan (1:25am local time on Saturday, April 16). The EERI community extends its sympathy to the victims as rescue and relief work continues.

EERI is currently monitoring the situation from media reports and notes from colleagues in the impacted region as part of its Learning from Earthquakes Program.

EERI has launched a Kumamoto Earthquake Virtual Clearinghouse website to archive earthquake data and post observations from this event.  Information will be posted as it becomes available, so please check back frequently. For current and timely information about the earthquake, please also see the USGS event page, and the PAGER report.

This earthquake follows a M6.2 earthquake on Thursday April, 14 (9:26pm local time) with damage described on the USGS site.
