The EERI Board of Directors met virtually via web conference on June 21, 2024, and in person in Oakland on September 19, 2024. President Janiele Maffei chaired both meetings.
At the June 2024 meeting, the Board confirmed their election of Ayse Hortacsu as Vice-President, approved appointments to the 2024 Honors Committee and the Shah Prize Committee, and approved the recommendation by the Student Awards Committee of the FEMA/NEHRP graduate fellowship recipient. The Board approved the 2024 Board election criteria and Nominating Committee members and finalized Board member liaison assignments for 2024. The Board discussed and approved the establishment of an EERI Emeritus Leadership Council and a proposal from the Oral History Committee to create a new Conversations with Earthquake Experts series. The Board reviewed and discussed the Executive Director’s report, EERI activities at the upcoming 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Milan, a membership renewal and recruitment update, and the closure of EERI’s Oakland Office. At the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Board disbanded the Budget Committee due to changes in the EERI budgeting process, with the remaining functions of the committee to be handled by the Finance Committee. Board members also received financial training from EERI’s accountants, and approved membership dues rates for 2025.
At the September 2024 meeting, the Board reviewed and approved the 2024 election slate, 2023-2024 Student Chapter reports, and the recommendations of the Honors Committee and Shah Prize Committee for the recipients of EERI’s 2025 honors and awards. The Board reviewed and discussed the 2024 EERI Membership Report and approved the creation of a new Lifetime Membership category. The Board also discussed suggestions for new fundraising, sponsorship, and development approaches brainstormed by EERI staff. The Board heard a report from the Finance Committee and reviewed and discussed the Executive Director’s report, the draft of the 2023 audit, and the preliminary draft of the 2025 budget. The Board also approved the formation of a new student chapter at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo.
At both meetings, the Board reviewed and approved previous meeting minutes and quarterly financial and investment statements.
