Leadership Communique from Jack Baker: New Plans for Earthquake Spectra

Jack Baker web2025 has been an exciting year for Earthquake Spectra. On behalf of EERI and the Spectra Editorial Board, I have several important updates to share.

New publication home

Starting in 2026, Earthquake Spectra will be published and hosted by Wiley. This shift will allow us to use enhanced electronic platforms that will provide an improved experience throughout the submission, review, and publication process. Readers will also benefit from faster publication times and enhanced discoverability features.

Wiley is a host for a large number of engineering journals, including several in related fields, and we believe that they will enable us to reach a larger audience. Sage Publishing has been a valuable host for us since 2019, when the journal shifted from a self-published model to a publisher-hosted one, and we appreciate their partnership and support during this important phase of the journal's growth.

Authors should continue submitting papers through the current system, and we will ensure a smooth transfer of work as we transition systems. Throughout and after the transition, EERI members will continue to have free access to new papers and the journal’s entire archive.

Increased sharing of research data and code

In 2024 the journal announced a shift to mandatory sharing of data and code associated with research papers. The 2025 issues to date have shown the benefits of this shift. Of the 62 Research and Data Papers published in the two issues released so far this year, all 62 research papers have a Data Availability statement. Of these, 38 (61%) provide new data or code; the others point to resources that existed previously or were restricted in resharing private data. For the authors who provided new resources, the most popular archival tools were DesignSafe, GitHub, Zenodo, and Supplementary Materials files. Numerous ground motion and structural testing data sets should facilitate follow-on studies, and the provided code will enable readers to quickly adopt proposed models. Thank you to all the authors who have embraced this policy and worked to enhance the reusability and extensibility of their research results!

Continued impact

The journal continues to occupy a unique role in publishing work focused on improving the practice of earthquake hazards mitigation, preparedness, and recovery. In the past year we have released special collections of papers on important topics such as the new U.S. Geological Survey’s National Seismic Hazard Model, reconnaissance findings from the 2023 Kahramanmaraş, Turkey Earthquake Sequence, and Advancements in Physics-Based Simulations. The journal’s Impact Factor also recently increased to 3.7, placing us among the top journals on related topics.

As we transition to our new publishing platform and continue our efforts to disseminate valuable data, code, and scholarship, the journal is extremely well-positioned to support EERI’s mission and provide thought leadership. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the many authors, Associate Editors, and reviewers who are responsible for this success.
