This 2026 program offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from earthquake experts in the field and to contribute to recovery knowledge from major earthquakes in Taiwan. Following successful past programs in Chile, New Zealand, and Mexico, this field study trip will provide attendees an opportunity to build an understanding of the role and importance of reconnaissance and provide familiarity with long-term reconnaissance and recovery assessment. The program seeks to inspire the next generation of leaders in seismic safety advocacy.

Who Should Apply:
The program is open to graduate students and early career researchers and practitioners with experience of 10 years or less. The organizers are keen to build on the interdisciplinary success of previous trips and seek applications from participants across a diverse spectrum of disciplines, including social sciences, earth sciences, and engineering. Preference will be given to EERI members. This is a popular program and the application for this trip is anticipated to be competitive. Space is limited to approximately 25 participants, therefore, it is unlikely that all qualified applicants will be selected for this unique learning opportunity.
Expected Cost of Participation:
A registration fee of approximately $2,000-$3,000 for early career professionals and $1,000-$2,000 for students will be required to participate in the program. The registration fee is expected to include hotel accommodations for official program dates, most shared meals, and in-country transportation. Final program costs will depend on the finalized itinerary and sponsorships. Program participants are responsible for all travel expenses to and from Taiwan.
Sponsorship Opportunities:
EERI is actively soliciting sponsors to help keep registration fees manageable for student and early career participants. Sponsorship of this program gives participants the opportunity to experience one of EERI’s esteemed Travel Study trips. Sponsorships for participant scholarships or exclusive anchor sponsorship are available. For more information about the benefits of sponsorship, contact EERI Executive Director Heidi Tremayne at
Tentative Program Itinerary:
The planning committee is actively developing the curriculum and itinerary for the program, which will focus on understanding how seismic resilience in Taiwan has evolved since the Chi-Chi earthquake over 25 years ago.Participants can expect to do some preparatory reading and attend several online webinars before the program starts. During the six-day program they will meet with researchers and practitioners and complete a group project based on what they have heard and observed during the program. The program will take place primarily around Taipei and Taichung. Potential focus areas for the trip include: NCREE testing facilities, retrofitted structures and infrastructure, seismic protection systems, geotechnical earthquake impacts, earthquake early warning, and past and present seismic policy development efforts
