On Sunday 26 December 2004, a great earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, Indonesia. This was one of the largest instrumentally recorded earthquakes in history, and it generated one of the most devastating tsunamis in recorded history. The tsunami affected at least 16 nations directly.

Documented fatalities exceeded 283,000 with the heaviest losses concentrated along the west coast of Aceh, Sumatra, but more than 40,000 died on distant shores around the Indian Ocean. More than 1 million people were displaced. This report contains 40+ papers on the topics of seismology, geology, strong ground motion, the tsunami, structures, lifelines, preparedness, response, and recovery. Papers address both the December 2004 and March 2005 earthquakes and tsunamis. Guest editor: Wilfred Iwan.
