The editorial board for the 900-page special issue of Earthquake Spectra (volume 22, Special Issue 3, June 2006) prepared a 108-page summary report on the Great Sumatra Earthquakes and Indian Ocean Tsunamis of 26 December 2004 and 28 March 2005. The great earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, Indonesia, on 26 December 2004 was one of the largest instrumentally recorded earthquakes in history, and it generated one of the most devastating tsunamis in recorded history. The tsunami affected at least 16 nations directly
