Oral History Series Vol. 13 Clarkson W. Pinkham

Stanley Scott, Interviewer. This 13th volume in the oral history series presents Clarkson W. Pinkham's distinguished career in structural engineering at the firm of S.B. Barnes Associates in Los Angeles, California, where he has worked for nearly 60 years. Pinkham has extensive knowledge of the testing, design, and use of a variety of materials for the design of such building components as steel decks and concrete frames. He played a critical role in developing new criteria for seismic design in California that later became incorporated into national building codes. He was a key participant in updating the 1973 edition of the SEAOC Blue Book. This edition set the standard for the state-of-the-art seismic provisions dealing primarily with changes for reinforced concrete walls and ductile frames. As a result of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, there was a greater understanding of the dynamics of buildings, story drift between floors, the importance factor for critical facilities, and soils effects. During this exciting era, Pinkham was also active in several technical associations that were developing proper seismic criteria for concrete and steel materials. He helped coordinate the seismic effort of all of these groups in the Structural Engineers Association of California Seismology Committee meetings, resulting in usable and practical code specifications. Pinkham has, throughout his career, believed that the principals of a firm must be directly involved in many areas. He has directed design in his office, participated in testing of material systems, and most of all presented this information to his fellow engineers. September 2006, 110 pages.
