Lessons Learned Over Time, Volume IV: The 1999 Turkey Earthquakes: Bridge Performance and Remedial Actions

The August 17, 1999 earthquake in Kocaeli, Turkey and the November 12, 1999 earthquake in Duzce, Turkey affected several bridges and other highway structures along the Trans European Motorway (TEM), providing valuable data about their earthquake performance. In general, the highway system performed well, despite the scale of the fault rupture and the significant near-fault ground motion. This report examines the earthquake performance of these highway structures and the remedial actions that were performed. It also classifies the damage to bridges and describes their performance levels. Several bridges may serve as instructive case studies, illustrating design factors and specific repair, replacement, and retrofit options that can improve seismic performance. 2003, 82 pages.

LESSONS LEARNED OVER TIME SERIES

The Lessons Learned Over Time series, part of EERI's Learning From Earthquakes program sponsored by the National Science Foundation, was established to capture and disseminate lessons that may not become apparent until some years after an earthquake, or which bear reevaluation in light of what we know today. These types of retrospective studies can help us improve disaster preparation and recovery by contributing to our understanding of earthquakes, their effects, and how we recover from them.
