Urban EQ Hazard Reduction: 5th US-Japan Workshop

Urban Earthquake Hazard Reduction: 5th US-Japan Workshop Proceedings. The 5th US-Japan Workshop on Urban Earthquake Hazard Reduction, sponsored by EERI and the Japan Institute of Social Safety Science, was held January 15-17, 1997, in Pasadena, California. The fifth in a series of joint projects, this meeting brought together top US and Japanese experts in recovery and reconstruction to focus on lessons learned in the short-, medium-, and long-term post-earthquake reconstruction process by focusing on the 1989 Loma Prieta, the 1994 Northridge, and the 1995 Kobe earthquakes. Plenary papers addressed lessons learned in the US and Japan dealing with earthquake response; post-earthquake housing, financing mitigation and recovery; and recovery and reconstruction. Working groups were charged with identifying specific lessons that have changed our understanding of seismic risk, emergency response, the built environment, housing, planning, health care of victims, lifelines, and economic recovery. In addition to working group summaries, the proceedings include individual abstracts in each of the above areas. August 1997. 455 pp.
