Artificial Intelligence Applications in Earthquake Engineering

Thursday, September 1, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM Pacific Time
REGISTER HERE

Artificial intelligence is rapidly developing, enhancing the role of data science in many disciplines including earthquake engineering. Applications of artificial intelligence are currently present in many aspects of our daily lives (e.g. automated driving cars, finding directions between two locations, facial recognition, e-commerce and marketing, healthcare, gaming, hiring processes, etc). When big data or data analytics is involved, like in many aspects of earthquake engineering, artificial intelligence emerges as the efficient response. This symposium will present and discuss current applications of artificial intelligence in different aspects of earthquake engineering and related disciplines.

Speakers include: Prof. Krishna Kumar; Prof. Adrian Rodriguez-Marek; Prof. Scott Brandenberg; Prof. Karianne Bergen; Dr. Qingkai Kong; Dr. Youzuo Lin; Prof. Youssef Hashash and Okan Ilhan; Prof. Jorge Macedo; Prof. Hiroyuki Miura; Prof. Jamie Padgett and R. Rincon; Rodrigo Silva-Lopez and Prof. Jack Baker; and Aidin Tamhidi and Prof. Yousef Bozorgnia.

For more information on the program, visit the event post on the San Diego chapter website here.

Impact of Climate Change on Community Earthquake Resilience

Friday, September 2, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM Pacific Time
REGISTER HERE

Human-induced climate change is becoming a global climate crisis. Natural hazards are increasing in frequency and intensity. New challenges are arising to earthquake professionals. Issues such as sea level rise, heavy rainfalls, and wildfires are making communities more seismically vulnerable. What are these new challenges in terms of community earthquake mitigation and resilience? How is the occurrence of earthquakes on top of natural hazards exacerbated by human-induced climate change affecting community earthquake resilience? What and how may earthquake professionals contribute to solve this global climate crisis? A global problem demands a global solution; what are the next steps in this direction? These and other questions will be discussed and addressed to provide some information and guidance about community earthquake resilience, the roles of earthquake professionals, and what other professionals are doing addressing other natural hazards directly affected by the global climate crisis.

Speakers include Prof. Daniel Armanios; Prof. Susan Cutter; Dr. Sahar Derakhshan; Prof. Negar Elhami-Khorasani; Dr. Alex Grant; Prof. Hussam Mahmoud; Dr. Therese McAllister; Vance Taylor; Prof. Benjamin Zaitchik; Prof. Adam Rose; Steve Moddemeyer; Dr. Kit Miyamoto and Dr. Amir Gilani.

For more information on the program, visit the event post on the San Diego chapter website here.

Spectra

Strategic Changes to the Editorial Board

The Earthquake Spectra Editorial Board is pleased to describe some strategic improvements. The role of Editor, currently held by Jack Baker, has been expanded to balance the load with the Editor-in-Chief (currently David Wald). The Editor will now handle roughly half of all submissions, focusing on those most closely aligned with the EIC and Editor’s primary disciplines. Currently, Wald will manage Seismology-related papers, Baker will manage Engineering papers, and they will split other key areas such as social science, geotechnical engineering, reconnaissance, and resilience. Anticipated benefits of this change include faster paper turnaround, better alignment of submissions with Editors' expertise, easier recruitment of future Editors, and freeing the Editor-in-Chief to pursue other important Earthquake Spectra initiatives.

Second Online Workshop on Overview of Non-ergodic Ground-Motion Models

The Natural Hazards Risk and Resiliency Research Center (NHR3) is organizing a second workshop on the development and applications of Non-ergodic Ground-Motion Models (NGMMs). The workshop will be hosted online on August 22nd from 9:00am–12:00 pm (Pacific Time). The objective of the workshop is to elaborate on methodologies and demonstrate the tools for the development and application of spatially varying NGMMs. The project is supported by the California Department of Transportation and Pacific Gas & Electric Company.

Participants may register here (free of charge). If you have any questions about the workshop, please email Greg Lavrentiadis at glavrentiadis@g.ucla.edu.

Quick Quake Briefing: South Carolina Earthquake Swarm of 2022

Thursday, August 18, 12:00-1:00 PM Pacific Time
REGISTER HERE

The EERI Northern California Regional Chapter is hosting a FREE webinar on the recent earthquake swarm in South Carolina that started in December 2021. South Carolina is experiencing the longest swarm of earthquakes in its recorded history. Over 50 earthquakes have occurred this year. The swarm began Dec. 27, 2021 with a M3.3, with the strongest being a M3.6 on June 29, 2022. These were among the two largest quakes to hit South Carolina in nearly a decade. Fortunately, the intensities of the recent swarm (<M4.0) were such that negligible damage occurred to the built environment. However, the frequent quakes caused anxiety and heightened awareness of seismic risks for many South Carolina citizens. This has led to more attention to the need for earthquake preparedness and emergency response planning.

Two speakers from South Carolina will present at the webinar:

  • Steven Jaume, Professor of Geology at the College of Charleston, will discuss the seismology of South Carolina and details of the recent swarm, including the possible effects of the Wateree River in changing the rock pore-pressure thereby triggering the swarm.
  • Brian Blake, Program Manager, Central United States Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC), will present an overview of CUSEC and activities in South Carolina on earthquake preparedness and emergency response planning.

The webinar will include time for participants to ask questions of the speakers.
