Webinar: LFE: Preliminary Geological and Structural Reconnaissance Observations from the August 9, 2020 Sparta, North Carolina Earthquake

Wednesday, 30 September 2020
Cost: Free

On August 9, 2020 at 8:07AM, the largest recorded earthquake to strike North Carolina occurred near Sparta. The 5.1 magnitude earthquake (MMI 6) was preceded in the days before by several small foreshocks felt by local residents and followed to date by ~100 aftershocks. In this webinar, a multidisciplinary team from NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, USGS, and NC Geological Survey discussed their observations including ground shaking characterization, geological features, and structural damage assessment.

Webinar: PDC: Lifeline Infrastructure System Resilience: Exploring what is it and how we can implement

Thursday, 10 September 2020
Cost: Paid

In this webinar, attendees gained an understanding of key concepts needed for lifeline systems to be resilient to earthquakes and other hazards. Functionality and operability are continuous expressions useful for measuring lifeline system resilience. These expressions are explored along with the basic lifeline services and their recoveries needed to ensure communities can achieve their resilience objectives./p>

Webinar: PDC: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Improving Community Resilience to Natural Hazards

Wednesday, 26 August 2020
Cost: Paid

This webinar explored moving from performance-based engineering to multi-disciplinary community resilience, in which engineering merges with social, economic, and information science. The webinar used 15 years of whole building shake table tests of resilient and non-resilient wood-frame apartment buildings to enter this discussion from an earthquake engineering perspective.

Webinar: YMC: Advances in Seismic Risk Assessment using Simulated Earthquake Ground Motions

Monday, 10 August 2020

Presented by the EERI Younger Members Committee, this webinar presented recent studies that utilize physics-based simulations to identify the important characteristics of earthquake ground motions and expected structural response. Physics-based simulations of earthquake ground motions have steadily emerged as an alternative for seismic risk assessment of civil structures, particularly for regions expected to experience large-magnitude and rare earthquakes, for which few observational data is available.

Webinar: LFE: Magna, Utah Earthquake Reconnaissance Briefing Webinar

Thursday, 23 July 2020

This Learning from Earthquakes webinar provided an overview of the impacts from the M5.7 March 18, 2020 Magna, Utah earthquake. In this multidisciplinary webinar, attendees gained insights covering science, engineering, and response aspects of the earthquake. Attendees also learned how the earthquake affected the natural and built environment, as well as about current mitigation efforts in Utah.

Webinar: EERINC: What changes to earthquake emergency response procedures have been driven by the current or future pandemics? (2/3)

Thursday, 16 July 2020

The EERI Northern California Regional chapter hosted a virtual discussion panel to dive into how various earthquake emergency preparedness professionals have started to rethink how their community would respond to an earthquake event during the current pandemic. Panelists provided a short overview of how their thinking about their job has changed since the pandemic began and then answered attendee questions.

Webinar: YMC: Reconnaissance Lessons Learned During the 2019 EERI New Zealand Travel Study Program

2020 5 26 LFE New Zealand evergreen

In case you missed our webinar, Reconnaissance Lessons Learned During the 2019 EERI New Zealand Travel Study Program, you can view it here. Presented to you by the Younger Members Committee, this webinar features lessons learned from the Learning from Earthquakes 2019 Travel Study Program in New Zealand, developed in partnership with QuakeCoRE, the New Zealand Centre for Earthquake Resilience. Program participants learned directly from those in the field through lectures, site visits, and group research projects. From Christchurch, to Kaikoura, then Wellington, they talked to local experts to understand the impacts of earthquakes. Panelists, who participated in the travel study program, will speak about the environmental impacts, opportunities, and challenges in rebuilding following major earthquakes in the country. Learn more about the Travel Study Program here.

Webinar: LFE: Preliminary Observations and Findings from the EERI Palu, Indonesia Earthquake and Tsunami Resilience Reconnaissance Team

2020 5 20 LFE Palu evergreen

If you missed our webinar Preliminary Observations & Findings from the EERI Palu, Indonesia Earthquake and Tsunami Resilience on May 20, you can now view it here. Hear highlights from the EERI reconnaissance trip to Palu, Indonesia, in November 2019, 14 months following the September 2018 earthquake. This earthquake triggered two unusual phenomena: a tsunami that occurred moments after the earthquake and liquefaction flows, both of which killed thousands of people. The unique aspects of both of these phenomena led to the ongoing displacement of large proportions of the population, and the lack of understanding of the causes of both continues to challenge the physical reconstruction and economic recovery processes. This webinar highlights some of these challenges, which involve making difficult decisions to restore housing and livelihoods in a context of uncertain future risks.

Webinar: EERI Distinguished Lecture: Functional Recovery: Designing for Community Resilience

If you missed the Distinguished Lecture, “Functional Recovery: What it Means to Design for Community Resilience,” featuring David Bonowitz (M.EERI,1994) you can catch it online here!

David’s lecture focuses on the emerging concept of functional recovery as a basis for earthquake-resistant design. You’ll gain insights on how design for functional recovery is a necessary tool for assessing and improving community resilience. The lecture will examine four dimensions of functional recovery: definitional, technical, policy, and implementation. As this concept becomes more influential in our field, the lecture will also explore the roles you can play in shaping this thinking into design practice.

Webinar: PDC: USGS Web Tools for Site-Specific Ground Motion Hazard Analysis

202002 USGSWebinar

USGS Web Tools for Site-Specific Ground Motion Hazard Analysis
Wednesday, April 8 2020 at 11 am PT / 2 pm ET
FREE for EERI members
| $50 for non-members (PDH hours included upon request)

You will leave the webinar with a greater understanding of how USGS web tools can be used to perform site-specific ground motion hazard analysis. The new 2019 California Building Code adopts the ASCE/SEI 7-16 Standard ("Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures") which requires site-specific ground motion analysis for many more structures than prior editions. For example, now site-specific analysis shall be performed for structures on Site Class D and E sites with S1 greater than or equal to 0.2g, with some exceptions. The webinar will also provide an opportunity for feedback on the USGS web tools from earthquake engineering users.

The webinar will include an introduction from Jorge Meneses (M.EERI,2006), RMA Group, Inc., Nicolas Luco, USGS, will demonstrate the USGS web tools. Following the demonstration, Nicolas Luco and Peter Powers (M.EERI,2018), also of USGS, will be available to answer questions from participants.
