1. How do I obtain member access to Earthquake Spectra articles?
As a benefit of membership, all current paid EERI members get full online access to Earthquake Spectra so you can read and download journal content. There are several easy options to realize your member access, as described below. For all options below you will use your EERI member database login credentials!
OPTION 1: Access Earthquake Spectra from the eeri.org website and get redirected to the new Earthquake Spectra website at Wiley after authentication using your EERI member database login credentials. These links can be found at several places on our website for your convenience:
- At the “Access Spectra” link from the “For Members” eeri.org website menu

- At our Earthquake Spectra information page linked from the top of the “What We Offer” eeri.org website menu

- At the bottom of the EERI homepage
OPTION 2: Login from the Earthquake Spectra website directly. Click on the “Login / Register” button at the top right of the Earthquake Spectra Homepage and select the third choice in the dropdown menu: “Login With EERI”. Use your EERI member database login credentials.
OPTION 3: Click on a link to any article featured in any future EERI email to members. These links are designed to send you to the member authentication screen first. Once you enter your EERI member database login credentials, you will then be redirected to the article that you clicked and will have full member access to read and download.
2. If EERI owns Earthquake Spectra, why does it partner with a publisher? How will Earthquake Spectra benefit from this partnership with WIley?
Earthquake Spectra remains wholly owned and managed by EERI, but we rely on our publishing partner to support publication logistics, website hosting for the journal volumes, and distribution of the journal on behalf of EERI. Similar to our last agreement with Sage from 2020-2025, our new publishing partnership with Wiley allows income from EERI’s publishing program to support EERI’s mission and work to achieve earthquake resilience in communities worldwide.
Benefits of this publishing partnership with Wiley include:
- Strong international visibility of EERI and the journal through Wiley’s sales and marketing channels.
- Support for the Earthquake Spectra editorial team in developing journal content and strategies for increasing impact.
- A modern web portal for handling article submissions and the peer-review process
- More robust platforms for increased article discoverability.
- Cost effective journal editing and management services, that leverage the vast publishing expertise of a variety of Wiley departments and team members.
- Broad sales and reach beyond what EERI can realize as a small nonprofit without deep expertise in publishing.
3. What will this mean to me as an Earthquake Spectra author?
- Will there be any new costs?
- Author fees will remain comparable to previous pricing.
- Over-length fees have been revised to be based on word count rather than typeset pages, providing transparency to authors up front without systematically increasing prices.
- To encourage authors to get involved with EERI as a member, Earthquake Spectra will continue to charge a Submission Fee for non members. It is typically more cost effective to join EERI, than to pay the submission fee. Please ensure that your membership is active prior to submission.
- EERI will no longer charge color print fees.
- Authors may elect to make their paper Open Access with Wiley for a fee. Some organizations or countries have made custom fee arrangements with Wiley for reduced or waived fees. Authors can check the Wiley website to see if an existing agreement will offset their fee. Authors will also be given information to verify and check this upon acceptance.
- What changes will there be to the licensing and copyright agreements?
- There will continue to be an author contributor form for authors to sign. Authors of subscription articles will sign a standard Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA). For Open Access articles, mandated authors will be taken automatically to sign the CC-BY license and all other authors will be given the choice to sign the CC-BY, CC-BY-NC, or CC-BY-NC-ND licenses. See Wiley’s Licensing Author Services page for examples.
- How long will it take for my article to be produced?
- Wiley offers high-quality production and fast acceptance-to-online publication times. New articles will be published online in their final copy-edited format within about 30 working days after acceptance to increase the discoverability and citations for your paper.
- We have also moved to a continuous publishing model, where articles immediately receive volume and issue specifics when they are first published online. We will retain quarterly issues.
- What else can I expect from Wiley?
- You’ll have the opportunity to access templates and other resources that will help you increase the visibility and impact of your articles. See Wiley’s comprehensive author promotion guide.
4. What will this mean to me as an Earthquake Spectra reader?
- EERI members retain exclusive online access to all current and past Earthquake Spectra volumes since the establishment of the journal in 1984, enhanced by the following features:
- Articles available online in a continuous publication model
- Clean, uncluttered space for readers, with enhanced tools for downloading, sharing, citing articles and discovering related content from any device

- Responsive design that automatically resizes to the device of your choice
- A flexible and dynamic homepage that will showcase new content and other featured content, such as new virtual collections of papers or special issues

- Earthquake Spectra is now an online-only journal, following the broad move of all academic journals to online-only distribution. Thus, Earthquake Spectra is no longer offered as a print subscription to individual EERI members via EERI or Wiley. For those interested in purchasing a print copy of a particular issue or volume, they can be purchased directly through a print-on-demand vendor, Sheridan. EERI members receive a substantial (>50%) discount if they sign up via Sheridan as a print subscriber. EERI members can request the discount code from
